What to Expect

Knowing what to expect at your pregnancy ultrasound can help you feel relaxed and ready for your appointment. Be sure to follow our tips on how to prepare so we can get the best possible images of your baby.

What are 2D, 3D, 4D and HD ultrasounds?

  • 2D is a basic ultrasound image, like what you see at the doctor’s office.

  • 3D is a detailed, three-dimensional image that shows your baby’s features.

  • 4D adds the dimension of time, allowing you to see your baby’s movements.

  • HD adds a virtual light source, producing remarkably precise images.

What will my ultrasound images look like?

It depends on how far along you are in your pregnancy:

  • Weeks 12 to 25: Your baby will appear thinner and their facial features won’t be as developed, but you’ll be able to see more of your baby on the screen, as well as more movement.

  • Weeks 26 to 33: Your baby’s cheeks will appear chubbier (especially from 28 to 32 weeks). Since they’ll be too big to fit on the screen entirely, we’ll focus more on their face, hands and feet.

  • Weeks 34 to 36: Results during this time are unpredictable because your baby’s face may not be in a good position or there may not be enough room to get quality images.

What if I’m having twins?

We recommend scheduling an ultrasound to see twins between 24 and 26 weeks. Your babies will be relatively thinner in appearance, but there will still be enough room to see them.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

The week before your appointment, drink eight glasses of water a day. This will help make sure there’s enough fluid around your baby’s face to get quality images. Be sure to do this the entire week leading up to your appointment for best results.

The day of your ultrasound, eat a sweet snack or drink some juice right before your appointment to help your baby wake up and be more active.

If you’re preparing for a gender reveal appointment between 14 and 20 weeks, drink 20 ounces of water half an hour before your appointment and don’t use the restroom until after. Having a somewhat full bladder can help us get a better view of your baby’s gender.

What if I don’t see my baby’s face?

We’ll put our very best efforts into getting high-quality images of your baby. But if we’re unable to get any images of their face, you’ll receive another ultrasound for free. You must schedule the free ultrasound on a weekday (Monday-Friday) within two weeks of the first ultrasound.

What if the gender reveal is wrong?

Certain factors, such as your baby's development and position, affect how clearly we can see their gender. For best results, we recommend doing a gender reveal ultrasound in the middle to end of week 15.

If we were to make a mistake, we would invite you back for another scan. If that scan confirms we told you the wrong gender, we would refund you the cost of the gender reveal ultrasound.

Does this replace the ultrasound I get at my doctor’s office?

No. Our ultrasounds are intended to give you the opportunity to see your baby between doctor’s visits. Since they’re not medically necessary, they’re not covered by insurance.
